Over 12 million immigrants from all over, entered america through Ellis Island. Ellis Island is a New York Harbor. Immigrants had to answer a question form (down below) before they got on a boat to take them to Ellis Island. As soon as they got to Ellis Island, they had to be checked for any sickness or disease they had. Doctors would make them climb stairs to see if they had trouble, if they had trouble they could possibly be sent home if they found any sickness or diseases. Wealthy automatically made it passed this step cause they had enough money.

After the immigrants finished doing tests and finding their family at Ellis Island, it was time to explore the city. They took them to the city, and gave them a place to stay but they had to figure out how they were going to pay for rent and other things like food. City conditions were horrendous, the immigrants had to live in one room houses called tenements and there were 3 on top of each other (down below).
